What is N-acetyl phenyl cysteine (NAP)? And Why Does the Toxin Zoomer Test for It?

Glutathione-derived urinary metabolite
N-acetyl phenyl cysteine (NAP) is a urine metabolite produced when the body conjugates phenyl-containing chemicals to glutathione and then N‑acetylates them for excretion. NAP reflects activity of phase II detox pathways and recent exposure to certain aromatic compounds, offering insight into how the body is processing those substances.

N-acetyl phenyl cysteine (NAP) FAQs

What is N-acetyl phenyl cysteine (NAP) and why is it important?
NAP is a urine breakdown product made when the body neutralizes certain phenyl‑based chemicals. It serves as a marker of recent exposure and of phase II detoxification activity that uses glutathione. Knowing NAP levels helps clinicians see whether those chemical exposures are being processed and excreted.
What does it mean if my N-acetyl phenyl cysteine (NAP) levels are low?
Low NAP can mean you had little recent exposure to phenyl‑containing chemicals, or it can reflect reduced formation of glutathione conjugates (for example from low glutathione availability or altered enzyme activity). Low values are best interpreted with other urine toxicants and detox‑related genetic results to understand whether they reflect low exposure or a change in processing.
What does it mean if my N-acetyl phenyl cysteine (NAP) levels are high?
Elevated NAP often points to recent or greater exposure to phenyl‑containing aromatic compounds and active phase II conjugation. Higher levels can also arise when the body processes more reactive intermediates during oxidative stress. Clinical interpretation requires comparison with other toxicant measurements and genetic markers of detox pathways.
Why is this biomarker included in the Toxin Zoomer?
Measuring NAP helps link measured environmental chemicals to a specific detox pathway (glutathione‑mercapturate). In the Toxin Zoomer, NAP adds functional context to exposure data and detox genetics, helping providers identify patterns of exposure versus individual differences in processing and elimination.
