Overview and History
Adiponectin is an adipokine: a protein secreted primarily by adipose tissue that circulates in the blood in several multimeric forms. It was identified in the 1990s (also called ACRP30 or AdipoQ) and signals through specific receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) to affect cellular metabolism.
Biologically, adiponectin modulates glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, and inflammatory signaling in vascular and metabolic tissues. Higher-molecular-weight forms are thought to be more active, and circulating levels reflect a balance of adipose secretion, clearance, and systemic metabolic state.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Lower adiponectin levels are commonly associated with patterns of reduced insulin sensitivity, higher inflammatory markers, and less favorable lipid particle profiles; these patterns often coincide with increased cardiometabolic strain. Higher adiponectin levels more often align with greater insulin sensitivity and lower systemic inflammation, though elevated values can also occur in other physiologic or catabolic contexts.
