What is TMAO and Why Does the Cardio Zoomer Test for It?

Gut-microbe-derived metabolite
TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) is a small molecule produced by gut microbes and modified by the liver. It participates in metabolic and vascular signaling, so its level can reflect interactions among diet, the microbiome, liver processing, and kidney clearance. Measuring TMAO offers insight into systemic patterns that relate to cardiometabolic and vascular stress.

TMAO FAQs

What is TMAO and why is it important?
TMAO is a molecule formed when gut microbes break down certain dietary compounds and the liver modifies the product. Its level reflects the combined activity of the microbiome, liver metabolism, and kidney clearance. Because TMAO relates to processes that affect blood vessels, lipids, and blood clotting, it helps reveal underlying biological patterns relevant to cardiovascular and metabolic health.
What does it mean if my TMAO levels are low?
Low TMAO can indicate lower production by gut microbes (due to diet or microbiome composition), efficient liver conversion and kidney clearance, or normal lab variability. Low levels are not inherently ‘‘good’’ or ‘‘bad’’ on their own; they are informative when compared with lipid tests, inflammation markers, kidney function, and clinical history. Your provider will consider the full Cardio Zoomer profile to interpret what low TMAO means for you.
What does it mean if my TMAO levels are high?
Higher TMAO levels may reflect increased microbial generation from dietary precursors, altered hepatic metabolism, or reduced renal excretion. In research, elevated TMAO often appears alongside patterns of metabolic and vascular stress, but it should be interpreted as one piece of a broader profile. Clinical context and other Cardio Zoomer markers are needed to understand the significance of an elevated result.
Why is TMAO included in the Cardio Zoomer?
TMAO helps reveal how the microbiome and host metabolism interact with lipid, inflammatory, and endothelial pathways. Including TMAO allows clinicians to detect microbiome‑related patterns and metabolic contributors that might not appear on standard lipid panels, improving the resolution of personalized cardiovascular risk assessment and care planning.
