Magnesium is a divalent inorganic cation (Mg2+) belonging to the alkaline earth metals and is classified as an essential dietary mineral. Historically recognized for its role in bone and metabolic chemistry, magnesium is required for enzymatic reactions that transfer or use phosphate groups and for stabilizing ATP, the cell’s primary energy carrier. Most body magnesium is inside cells and bone rather than in blood. It supports mitochondrial ATP production, influences ion channels that control nerve and muscle excitability, and participates in nucleic acid stability and enzyme activation. Cellular transporters and renal handling largely determine circulating and tissue levels.

Interpreting Highs and Lows
