Overview and History
COQ4 is a nuclear gene encoding a mitochondrial membrane protein that stabilizes the multienzyme complex responsible for producing ubiquinone (coenzyme Q). The gene is evolutionarily conserved and was characterized through biochemical studies in yeast and genetic analyses in humans that linked COQ proteins to CoQ biosynthesis.
Functionally, COQ4 acts as a structural/scaffolding component of the CoQ biosynthetic machinery. Proper COQ4 activity supports efficient electron transport, ATP production, and recycling of lipid-soluble antioxidants; variation in COQ4 can shift cellular energy and redox patterns without implying a specific clinical condition on its own.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Interpretation centers on the predicted impact of the variant rather than a simple ‘‘high’’ or ‘‘low’’ number. Variants predicted to reduce COQ4 function may be associated with lower CoQ production, altered mitochondrial efficiency, and downstream changes in CoQ10 blood levels, fatty acid ratios, or oxidative markers. By contrast, genotypes without high-impact variants generally align with expected CoQ biosynthesis and typical panel patterns.
