Overview and History

AFB2 belongs to the aflatoxin family of polyketide-derived mycotoxins produced primarily by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These compounds are secondary metabolites of mold that occur in certain foods and in damp, water-damaged environments; they are chemically related to aflatoxins B1, G1 and others. Biologically, aflatoxins do not have a normal role in human physiology. After exposure, AFB2 can be metabolized by hepatic enzymes into more water-soluble products that are eliminated in urine or bile. Analytical methods such as LC-MS/MS can detect parent compounds and metabolites to quantify recent exposure and help interpret how the body is processing these chemicals.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Elevated AFB2 levels typically indicate greater recent exposure or higher absorbed burden from contaminated food, storage, or moldy environments, or reduced clearance if metabolic pathways are slower. Low or undetectable AFB2 levels generally suggest minimal recent exposure, rapid clearance, or timing of the sample after exposure. Results should be interpreted alongside other mycotoxins, urinary creatinine and detoxification genetics to understand exposure sources, metabolic capacity, and whether the finding reflects transient contact or a sustained burden.
