Overview and History

Atrazine belongs to the triazine class of synthetic herbicides and works by inhibiting photosystem II electron transport in plants, which blocks a key step in photosynthesis. It has been widely applied since the mid-20th century for weed control in crops such as corn and sorghum. Atrazine is moderately persistent and mobile in some soils and water systems. Environmental and biological monitoring also track transformation products such as desethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine, which arise from breakdown in the environment or the body.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Higher urinary atrazine or metabolite levels generally reflect more recent or greater exposure — for example from nearby agricultural use, contaminated drinking water, or occupational contact. Low or undetectable levels suggest minimal recent exposure or that the compound has been cleared.
