Overview and History
DETP belongs to the dialkylphosphate (DAP) class of metabolites that appear after diethyl organophosphate insecticides are metabolized by microbes, the environment, or the body. It is detected in urine using sensitive mass-spectrometry methods and serves as a biomarker of exposure rather than an active chemical itself.
DETP has been used in environmental health and occupational studies as a routine biomonitoring marker because it integrates multiple exposure routes (dietary, residential, or occupational). Biologically, DETP reflects recent contact: DAP metabolites are relatively short-lived in urine, and measured levels depend on exposure timing, dose, and individual metabolic processing.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated DETP levels may indicate recent or repeated contact with diethyl organophosphate pesticides from sources such as food, home products, or workplace environments. Higher values should be interpreted with the rest of the DAP metabolites, urine concentration adjustments (e.g., creatinine), exposure history, and detox-related genetics.
Low or undetectable DETP levels generally suggest low recent exposure or that sampling occurred after the metabolites were cleared; they can also reflect urine dilution or faster metabolic elimination in some individuals.
