Gliotoxin is a fungal secondary metabolite in the epipolythiodioxopiperazine (ETP) chemical class. It was first identified from Aspergillus species and is produced by several mold strains; its structure includes a reactive sulfur bridge that underlies much of its biochemical reactivity. Biologically, gliotoxin interacts with cellular thiols and antioxidant systems, can affect mitochondrial function, and modulates immune cell processes such as phagocytosis and signaling. These actions make it a marker of biologically active mold exposure and a compound of interest when studying environmental impacts on inflammation and cellular stress.
