Glyphosate (N‑(phosphonomethyl)glycine) is a synthetic, broad‑spectrum herbicide first commercialized in the 1970s. Chemically it is a phosphonate compound and is one of the most widely applied herbicides globally. Biochemically, glyphosate inhibits 5‑enolpyruvylshikimate‑3‑phosphate synthase (EPSPS), an enzyme in the shikimate pathway found in plants and some microbes.
