Overview and History

PFDeA (perfluorodecanoic acid) is a perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid in the broader PFAS chemical class. Chemically, it is a highly fluorinated, long‑chain molecule that resists environmental and biological breakdown, which is why it is grouped with other persistent industrial chemicals. Originally developed for stain‑ and water‑resistant applications in the mid‑20th century, PFDeA has been detected in environmental samples, wildlife, and human biospecimens. It is not a native biological molecule; research focuses on exposure patterns, persistence, and associations with changes in biomarkers related to lipids, immune activity, and endocrine signaling.
