PFPeA is a perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (a C5 PFAS) belonging to the larger class of PFAS chemicals. These compounds were developed for their water‑ and stain‑resistant properties and have been used in manufacturing, firefighting foams, and treated consumer products. PFPeA emerged in environmental testing as attention to short‑chain PFAS grew after restrictions on some legacy long‑chain PFAS. Biologically, PFPeA is not produced by the body. It is chemically stable, resistant to breakdown, and can bind to proteins and circulate before being cleared. Human biomonitoring detects PFPeA in urine or blood to estimate recent exposure and elimination trends; elimination rates vary by compound and by individual factors that affect clearance.
