Satratoxin G belongs to the trichothecene class of mycotoxins and is most commonly associated with Stachybotrys and related filamentous fungi that grow in water-damaged materials. It was characterized through environmental and toxicology studies of mold-contaminated buildings and agricultural products, and is monitored because of its stability and biological activity. Biochemically, satratoxin G interferes with eukaryotic ribosomal function and protein synthesis and can activate cellular stress pathways, including inflammatory signaling and apoptosis in exposed cells. Laboratory work has shown it is highly bioactive at low concentrations in cell and tissue models, which is why it is included among environmental mycotoxin markers.
