Overview and History

Thallium is a post‑transition heavy metal (atomic number 81) discovered in 1861 by William Crookes and named for its bright green spectral line. It is a soft, malleable element used historically in electronics, glass manufacturing, and formerly in some pesticides; today environmental thallium can arise from mining, smelting, coal combustion, and industrial discharges. Biologically, thallium is non‑essential and can behave as a potassium mimic at the cellular level, which alters ion handling and enzyme activity in tissues. Clinical testing focuses on quantifying exposure and excretion rather than measuring a physiological function, and analytic methods such as ICP‑MS allow sensitive detection in urine and other matrices.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Elevated urinary thallium generally suggests recent or ongoing exposure and increased body burden relative to local background; sources include environmental contamination, occupational contact, or contaminated food and water. Higher values can also reflect reduced renal clearance or co‑exposure patterns that impair elimination.
