Overview and History
ADD1 – rs4961 is a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the ADD1 gene, often reported as the Gly460Trp change. It is a genetic marker rather than a protein or metabolite; laboratories report whether an individual carries the common or variant allele.
Alpha‑adducin is a cytoskeletal protein expressed in kidney tubular cells and other tissues. Research has linked rs4961 to subtle differences in ion transport and sodium reabsorption in some populations, which is why the variant has been studied in relation to blood‑pressure traits and salt sensitivity. The marker provides inherited context rather than a standalone clinical measurement.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Presence of the rs4961 variant allele (often described as higher “levels” of the variant) has been associated in some studies with greater renal sodium reabsorption and with blood‑pressure patterns that are more sensitive to salt intake. Absence of the variant allele (lower or no variant copies) suggests a genetic background without that specific association. Interpretation requires the full Cardio Zoomer profile—blood pressure measurements, electrolytes, renin/aldosterone markers, and other genetic and biochemical data—to understand whether the genetic pattern aligns with observed physiology.
