Overview and History
These markers are single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the AGT gene. AGT encodes angiotensinogen, a liver-produced protein that is the substrate for renin and the source of angiotensin peptides. The SNPs rs699, rs4762 and rs5051 are common alleles that have been studied as modifiers of AGT expression or function.
AGT and its variants became a focus of cardiovascular genetics as researchers sought inherited contributors to variability in vascular tone and fluid handling. While each SNP is a small piece of inherited variation, together they can influence the biochemical balance of the renin–angiotensin system and interact with environmental and metabolic factors measured elsewhere on the Cardio Zoomer panel.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Because these are genetic variants rather than a single analyte, clinical reports frame results as alleles associated with relatively higher or lower angiotensinogen expression or activity. Alleles linked to higher AGT expression or function are associated with patterns such as greater angiotensinogen availability and tendencies toward increased vasoconstrictive signaling or salt-responsive fluid retention. Alleles associated with lower expression suggest the opposite pattern—less angiotensinogen substrate and relatively reduced downstream signaling.
Interpretation is context-dependent: the genetic pattern is most informative when evaluated alongside biochemical, hemodynamic, and metabolic markers from the full Cardio Zoomer profile, rather than taken alone.
