Overview and History
APOB encodes apolipoprotein B, the main structural protein of low-density and very-low-density lipoprotein particles. Biochemically, ApoB helps package and transport cholesterol and triglycerides in the bloodstream and largely determines particle number and composition.
Population-level studies and genome-wide association analyses have identified common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) such as rs693, rs515135, and rs6752026 that associate with measured ApoB and LDL-related traits. These variants act as modifiers of lipid biology and are useful for explaining inherited differences in how individuals carry and process lipids.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Genotypes associated with higher ApoB or LDL particle number tend to coincide with higher circulating ApoB concentrations and lipid patterns that often accompany elevated cholesterol-carrying particle burden; such patterns can overlap with metabolic strain or inflammatory signals seen elsewhere on the panel. Genotypes associated with lower ApoB often track with fewer LDL/VLDL particles and lower measured ApoB, which can align with more favorable lipid readouts. Genetic findings describe predisposition and must be interpreted with other Cardio Zoomer measures and clinical information, since diet, weight, medications and inflammation also shape ApoB and lipoprotein profiles.
