Overview and History
Classification and origin: The Framingham Risk Score is a multivariable clinical risk algorithm developed from the Framingham Heart Study, a long-term epidemiologic cohort begun in the mid-20th century. It was created to quantify how routinely measured clinical factors combine to predict short-term vascular risk in population groups.
Core function: Rather than measuring a single molecule, the score integrates demographic and clinical inputs to produce a probabilistic estimate. Its clinical relevance stems from widespread validation and use as a standard way to compare risk across individuals and cohorts, and to contextualize biomarker profiles in research and practice.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Higher scores indicate a greater estimated 10‑year likelihood of adverse cardiovascular events and are commonly associated with older age, higher cholesterol or unfavorable lipid patterns, elevated blood pressure, active smoking, and diabetes. Lower scores indicate a lower estimated 10‑year likelihood and are often seen with younger age, favorable lipid measures, normal blood pressure, non‑smoking status, and absence of diabetes. Interpretation should always be done alongside the full Cardio Zoomer panel because advanced biomarkers (for example, ApoB, Lp(a), inflammatory or genetic markers) can modify the clinical picture and the meaning of a given score.
