About Homoarginine
Overview and History
Homoarginine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid structurally related to arginine. It is produced and metabolized by enzymatic pathways in organs such as the liver and kidney and circulates in plasma rather than being incorporated into proteins.
First described in biochemical studies decades ago, interest in homoarginine increased when observational research linked circulating levels to measures of vascular health. Biologically, homoarginine can influence nitric oxide synthase activity and modulate nitric-oxide availability, so it is viewed as one contributor to endothelial tone, vascular signaling, and interactions with renal amino acid handling.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Low homoarginine levels have been associated in observational studies with patterns suggestive of reduced nitric-oxide signaling and with markers of greater vascular stress or worse vascular outcomes. Higher levels are less consistently linked to clinical outcomes; elevated values may reflect altered amino acid metabolism, changes in renal clearance, or other metabolic shifts. Any single value is most informative when interpreted in the context of the full Cardio Zoomer panel (arginine, ADMA/SDMA, renal markers, inflammation, lipids and oxidative stress) to clarify whether the pattern points to vascular dysfunction, kidney effects, or benign variation.
