Overview and History
hsCRP is the sensitive assay for C-reactive protein (CRP), a pentameric acute-phase protein made mainly by hepatocytes in response to cytokines such as interleukin-6. CRP was first identified in the 1930s for its reaction with pneumococcal C-polysaccharide; modern high-sensitivity assays quantify concentrations relevant to chronic, low-grade inflammation rather than only acute infection.
Biochemically, CRP participates in innate immune signaling, opsonization and complement activation after tissue injury or pathogen exposure. Clinically, hsCRP is used as a nonspecific systemic inflammation marker that tracks dynamic inflammatory flux and complements targeted markers rather than indicating a single cause on its own.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated hsCRP indicates increased systemic inflammatory activity and is associated with recent infection or injury, chronic inflammatory conditions, metabolic stress (for example insulin resistance or obesity), and certain lifestyle exposures such as smoking. Low hsCRP suggests little active systemic inflammation at the time of sampling and is often seen with lower inflammatory burden, but it does not exclude localized or intermittent inflammatory events.
