KIF6 encodes a member of the kinesin family of microtubule motor proteins, molecules that transport organelles and macromolecules within cells. The rs20455 single-nucleotide polymorphism substitutes arginine for tryptophan at position 719 (often written W719R), a common coding change detectable by routine genotyping.
Early research suggested the rs20455 variant might associate with differences in cardiovascular-related outcomes and in responses to certain medications, which led to interest in its clinical utility. Subsequent studies produced mixed results, so rs20455 is best understood as a common genetic marker that provides context about inherited biological patterns rather than a definitive predictor on its own.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Genetic results for rs20455 are reported as genotypes (for example, zero, one, or two copies of the 719R allele) rather than continuous concentration ‘‘levels.’’ Presence of one or two copies of the variant allele has been associated in some studies with modest differences in cardiovascular-related traits and in drug-response patterns; absence of the variant means those specific associations were not observed in that individual.
