About Myeloperoxidase (MPO)
Overview and History
MPO is a heme-containing peroxidase predominantly produced by neutrophils and monocytes. First characterized in the mid-20th century, it is stored in azurophilic granules and released when these immune cells activate.
Biochemically, MPO catalyzes hydrogen peroxide–dependent reactions that form reactive species such as hypochlorous acid. These reactive products chemically modify proteins, lipids, and lipoproteins and thereby influence cell signaling, particle function, and local oxidative burden.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated MPO levels typically reflect increased neutrophil or monocyte activation and greater systemic oxidative activity; this is associated with patterns of lipid modification, inflammatory signaling, and endothelial stress. Elevated values can occur alongside other markers of inflammation or oxidative damage and should be interpreted together with lipid, endothelial, and inflammatory results on the panel.
Low MPO levels generally indicate lower circulating enzyme activity and less immune-cell–driven oxidative modification; rare inherited low MPO expression can also produce low values. Isolated MPO values are most informative when viewed in the context of the full Cardio Zoomer profile and clinical information.
