It is a biochemical summary metric used in clinical and epidemiologic studies to characterize lipid balance and to compare lipid profiles across individuals and populations. Historically, ratios like TC/HDL-C have been used as simple, reproducible markers in population research because they capture both the numerator (total circulating cholesterol) and the relative contribution of HDL. Biologically, the ratio reflects how different cholesterol fractions are distributed in the bloodstream and helps highlight patterns that single analytes alone may not reveal.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Higher TC/HDL-C values indicate a greater amount of total cholesterol relative to HDL, which can result from elevated non‑HDL cholesterol, low HDL, or a combination.
