What is Total Cholesterol (TC) and Why Does the Cardio Zoomer Test for It?

Total circulating cholesterol measure
Total cholesterol (TC) is the combined amount of cholesterol carried in all blood lipoproteins. Cholesterol is a lipid sterol used for cell membranes and as a precursor for hormones and bile acids; in blood it travels inside particles such as LDL and HDL. Measuring TC gives a broad snapshot of the total cholesterol load and helps guide interpretation of more detailed lipid and genetic markers.

Total Cholesterol (TC) FAQs

What is Total Cholesterol (TC) and why is it important?
Total cholesterol sums the cholesterol contained in all blood lipoproteins. Cholesterol is a normal molecule used for building cells and making hormones, but the amount carried in the blood reflects overall lipoprotein burden. Knowing TC gives a simple starting point that helps clinicians decide which additional lipid and genetic tests to consider.
What does it mean if my Total Cholesterol (TC) levels are low?
Low TC may reflect reduced cholesterol production, problems absorbing fats, certain metabolic or nutritional states, or the influence of medications or recent illness. In some contexts, low TC accompanies a healthy lipid profile, but it can also signal other metabolic changes that merit review. A low value is most informative when interpreted with HDL, LDL/ApoB, triglycerides, clinical history, and other Cardio Zoomer results.
What does it mean if my Total Cholesterol (TC) levels are high?
Higher TC indicates a greater total amount of cholesterol circulating in lipoproteins and may be associated with increased numbers or cholesterol content of atherogenic particles, altered metabolism, or inherited patterns. Elevated TC on its own does not explain which lipoprotein fractions are responsible, so interpretation requires the full lipid profile, particle-specific markers, inflammation measures, and genetic context. Providers use that combined information to clarify which biological pathways are most relevant.
Why is this biomarker included in the Cardio Zoomer?
TC provides a fundamental, quantitative summary of cholesterol carried by all lipoproteins and serves as the baseline for more detailed lipid and genetic analyses in Cardio Zoomer. Paired with ApoB, LDL/HDL fractions, ceramides, inflammatory markers and genetic variants, TC helps reveal whether total lipid load, particle type, metabolism, or inherited factors are driving a person’s cardiovascular pattern. That layered view supports more individualized assessment and clinical decision-making.
