Overview and History
rs2010963 is a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the VEGFA gene, which encodes the vascular endothelial growth factor A protein. As a genetic marker, it falls into the category of common regulatory variants that can influence how much VEGF‑A protein is produced.
VEGF‑A itself is a potent angiogenic and endothelial signaling protein. Since its discovery as a central driver of blood vessel growth and permeability, VEGF‑A and common variants in its gene have been studied for their effects on circulating VEGF levels, tissue repair processes, and vascular responsiveness.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Associations observed in research indicate that certain rs2010963 alleles correlate with relatively higher circulating VEGF‑A, which can reflect increased angiogenic signaling, vascular remodeling activity, or endothelial activation.
