Anti-actin antibodies are autoantibodies directed against filamentous actin (F-actin), a highly conserved cytoskeletal protein found in virtually all cells. As immunoglobulins that bind actin epitopes, they are measured to detect immune recognition of intracellular structural components. These antibodies emerged in clinical research as markers of immune activity directed at tissue structure. Actin itself is central to cell shape, motility, and the maintenance of epithelial tight junctions, so immune targeting of actin can reflect processes that affect tissue architecture and barrier function.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Elevated Anti-Actin levels may reflect immune recognition of cytoskeletal components and can be seen in contexts of tissue stress, mucosal barrier disruption, or cross-reactivity with external antigens. Such elevations are a pattern that suggests structural protein involvement but do not specify a single cause.
