Overview and History
Corn LTP belongs to the non-specific lipid transfer protein (ns-LTP) family, a group of small (~7–9 kDa), cysteine-rich proteins encoded across many plant species. Biochemically they bind and transport lipids in plant cell walls and are often abundant in seeds, epidermal tissues, and fruit skins.
LTPs were characterized initially for their role in plant lipid movement and later noted for biochemical stability: tight disulfide bonding makes them resistant to heat and digestive enzymes. That stability means LTPs can remain intact in processed foods and are reproducible targets for laboratory immune assays evaluating food-related immune patterns.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated antibody responses to corn LTP can indicate measurable immune recognition of that protein. Elevated IgA levels are more suggestive of mucosal or gut-associated immune activity, while elevated IgG levels point toward systemic immune exposure. Such elevations may also reflect cross-reactivity with similar LTPs from other plants.
Low or undetectable levels typically mean little measurable immune engagement with corn LTP at the time of sampling, which can reflect low recent exposure, immune tolerance, or timing relative to exposure. Any single LTP result is most informative when interpreted alongside the Food Zoomer’s full IgA/IgG profile, symptom pattern, and dietary history.
