Globulins are a biochemical class of serum proteins, traditionally separated from albumin by electrophoresis into alpha, beta, and gamma fractions. Gamma globulins largely contain immunoglobulins (antibodies such as IgG and IgA), while alpha and beta fractions include carrier proteins, complement components, and certain enzymes. First described during early serum protein studies, globulins are produced by both the liver (many transport and acute-phase proteins) and B‑cells/plasma cells (antibodies).
