Lactoferrin is a member of the transferrin family of iron-binding glycoproteins. It is synthesized in mammary glands and secreted into milk, and it is also stored in neutrophil secondary granules and present in saliva, tears, and intestinal secretions. Biochemically it binds iron tightly, which affects microbial access to iron and alters microbial growth dynamics. Functionally, lactoferrin acts at mucosal surfaces as part of innate immunity: it binds iron, can interact directly with microbes and host cells, and influences inflammatory signaling and barrier functions. Initially recognized as a prominent milk protein, lactoferrin was later identified as a broader mucosal immune mediator with clinical relevance as a marker of neutrophil activity and mucosal immune status.
