What is Serum albumin and Why Does the Food Zoomer Test for It?

Major blood transport protein
Serum albumin is the most abundant protein in blood plasma, produced by the liver. It helps maintain blood vessel fluid balance and carries small molecules, making it a useful marker of protein status and systemic shifts.

Serum albumin FAQs

What is Serum albumin and why is it important?
Serum albumin is the most common protein in blood, made mainly by the liver. It helps keep fluid inside blood vessels and transports hormones, fats, and other small molecules. Because albumin levels change with protein status, inflammation, and hydration, they help shape how other lab results are interpreted.
What does it mean if my Serum albumin levels are low?
Low albumin can be associated with reduced protein production, increased loss through urine or the gut, inadequate dietary protein, or shifts that occur during acute inflammation or fluid overload. Low values can change how substances are carried in the blood and may affect interpretation of other tests. Results are best reviewed with other Food Zoomer markers and clinical information.
What does it mean if my Serum albumin levels are high?
High serum albumin is uncommon and most often reflects reduced plasma volume (dehydration) or laboratory variation. Mild elevations alone rarely point to a specific biological process; clinical context and other labs are needed for interpretation.
Why is Serum albumin included in the Food Zoomer?
Albumin provides a snapshot of protein status, liver synthetic function, hydration, and inflammation. That context helps providers determine whether antibody patterns reflect localized immune responses or broader systemic shifts, supporting more precise nutrition planning.
