Overview and History
8-OHdG is an oxidized nucleoside derived from deoxyguanosine after reactive oxygen species modify the guanine base. Biochemically it is produced during DNA damage and subsequent repair processes; the damaged base is excised and excreted, most commonly measured in urine as a noninvasive indicator of DNA oxidation.
First identified in the mid-20th century and refined in later analytical research, 8-OHdG has been widely used in studies of oxidative stress, environmental exposure, and aging. Laboratory methods include mass spectrometry and immunoassays; method differences can affect values, so consistent assay context matters for interpretation.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated 8-OHdG levels may indicate increased oxidative modification of DNA, which can be associated with higher reactive oxygen species production, inflammation, mitochondrial inefficiency, or exposure to oxidative agents. Persistently higher values often appear alongside other redox signals such as lipid or protein oxidation and variations in antioxidant markers.
Low 8-OHdG levels may reflect lower oxidative DNA damage, effective repair and antioxidant defenses, or simply lower recent exposure. Low values can also result from urine dilution, timing, or laboratory variability, so results should be interpreted within the full Cellular Zoomer panel and clinical context rather than as a standalone measure.
