Overview and History
8-iso-Prostaglandin F2α belongs to the F2-isoprostane family, a class of prostaglandin-like compounds produced non-enzymatically from arachidonic acid. It was characterized in the 1990s and has since been validated as a reliable biochemical index of in vivo lipid peroxidation.
Biochemically, 8-iso-PGF2α forms when reactive oxygen species (ROS) attack polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes. Unlike enzymatic prostaglandins, isoprostanes are generated by free radical chemistry, are chemically stable, and can be quantified in urine and plasma as a specific readout of oxidative lipid damage rather than short-lived signaling molecules.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated urinary or plasma 8-iso-PGF2α suggests increased lipid peroxidation and higher oxidative burden. Such elevation is associated with greater free-radical activity from sources like inflammation, environmental exposures, metabolic strain, or mitochondrial inefficiency, but interpretation requires correlating with other redox and metabolic markers.
Low levels generally indicate relatively low lipid oxidative damage and may reflect effective antioxidant defenses, lower exposure to oxidative stressors, or timing and technical factors in sample collection. Any single value should be seen alongside other Cellular Zoomer markers (glutathione turnover, DNA oxidation, antioxidant genotypes) to form a complete picture of cellular redox status.
