Overview and History
CEL (Nε-Carboxyethyllysine) is classified as an advanced glycation end product (AGE), a biochemical modification produced when reactive carbonyl compounds—often derived from sugar metabolism—bind to amino acids such as lysine. Biochemically, CEL reflects carbonylation and non-enzymatic glycation of proteins and is measured in biofluids to indicate protein-level molecular changes.
Historically, AGEs like CEL have been studied as markers of cumulative metabolic and oxidative stress because they alter protein structure and signaling. CEL specifically arises from glycolytic byproducts and methylglyoxal pathways, making it a useful indicator of carbonyl burden and the biochemical environment that promotes oxidative modifications.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated CEL levels may indicate a higher burden of protein glycation and carbonyl stress, often associated with increased reactive sugar metabolites, higher oxidative load, or strained detox/antioxidant capacity. Such elevations are an association with altered metabolic or redox balance rather than a direct diagnosis.
Low CEL levels generally suggest lower cumulative protein glycation or more efficient clearance and antioxidant handling, but low results can also reflect timing, renal handling, or differences in production. CEL interpretation is most informative when considered alongside other Cellular Zoomer markers of oxidative damage, mitochondrial function, detox pathways, and antioxidant genetics.
