DOPAC is an organic acid and a catecholamine metabolite produced when dopamine is enzymatically oxidized and then converted to its acid form. Biochemically it arises through monoamine oxidase–mediated deamination of dopamine to an aldehyde intermediate, followed by aldehyde dehydrogenase action to yield DOPAC. Discovered and characterized in neurochemistry research over the last century, DOPAC has been used as a stable marker of intracellular dopamine metabolism.
