Overview and History
HPHPA (3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxypropionic acid) is classified as an organic acid and is primarily a microbial metabolite detected in urine. It arises when specific gut bacteria process aromatic amino acids; it is not a primary human metabolic intermediate but serves as a biochemical readout of gut microbial activity.
HPHPA was identified in studies linking gut microbial products with systemic biochemistry and has been used in research examining how microbial metabolism interfaces with host pathways. Its core biological role in testing is as a biomarker: it signals patterns of bacterial phenylalanine/tyrosine catabolism rather than a direct human enzymatic function.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated HPHPA levels often indicate increased microbial breakdown of aromatic amino acids in the gut. This pattern can be associated with shifts in gut microbial composition or overrepresentation of bacteria that produce this metabolite and may coincide with other markers of altered gut metabolism.
Low or undetectable HPHPA suggests minimal production by gut microbes or efficient downstream handling by the host.
