HVA (homovanillic acid) and DOPAC (3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) are biochemical products formed when the body breaks down dopamine. Both are measurable in urine and fall into the category of catecholamine metabolites used in neurochemical and metabolic research. Historically these metabolites have been studied to understand neurotransmitter turnover and biochemical pathways in peripheral and central systems. The ratio of HVA to DOPAC helps summarize relative flux through methylation versus oxidative deamination pathways and is influenced by enzymes such as COMT and MAO, plus transport and excretion processes.
