What is Kynurenic Acid and Why Does the Cellular Zoomer Test for It?

Tryptophan-kynurenine pathway metabolite
Kynurenic acid is a small molecule produced when the amino acid tryptophan is processed along the kynurenine pathway. It acts as a neuroactive and immunomodulatory metabolite, influencing glutamate signaling and immune-related chemistry; measuring it helps reveal shifts in neurotransmitter balance and metabolic responses to stress or inflammation.

Kynurenic Acid FAQs

What is Kynurenic Acid and why is it important?
Kynurenic acid is a byproduct of tryptophan metabolism that acts on brain signaling pathways and interacts with immune-related chemistry. It can modulate glutamate-related activity and has antioxidant-like effects in some contexts. Because its level reflects how tryptophan is routed through metabolic pathways, KYNA helps reveal broader shifts in neurotransmitter balance and metabolic stress.
What does it mean if my Kynurenic Acid levels are low?
Low KYNA suggests reduced conversion of kynurenine into kynurenic acid or limited availability of precursor tryptophan. This pattern may occur when pathway flux is redirected elsewhere, when enzyme function or cofactors are limited, or when substrate supply is lower. Low KYNA should be interpreted with related panel markers (tryptophan, kynurenine, inflammation and nutrient indicators) to understand the broader metabolic pattern.
What does it mean if my Kynurenic Acid levels are high?
Higher KYNA levels can indicate increased shunting of tryptophan into the kynurenine pathway or enhanced activity of enzymes that form KYNA. Elevated KYNA often appears alongside signals of immune activation, altered microbiome activity, or shifts in downstream metabolism; however, its significance depends on other kynurenine metabolites and redox or inflammatory markers. Clinical context and the full panel are needed to interpret whether high KYNA reflects an adaptive response or a metabolic imbalance.
Why is Kynurenic Acid measured on the Cellular Zoomer?
Measuring KYNA helps providers map tryptophan routing, neurotransmitter-related chemistry, and immune-metabolic interactions as part of a comprehensive cellular profile. Within the Cellular Zoomer, KYNA adds a layer of insight about neuroactive metabolites and pathway balance that complements mitochondrial, redox, detoxification, and genetic markers, supporting more precise interpretation of biochemical patterns.
