Overview and History
Lactic acid (lactate) is a small organic acid formed by the enzymatic reduction of pyruvate via lactate dehydrogenase; the biologically active form is L‑lactate. It was first isolated in the late 18th century and has since been recognized as a central intermediate in carbohydrate metabolism.
Biologically, lactate serves multiple roles: it is an end product of high-rate glycolysis, a transportable fuel between tissues and the liver (the Cori cycle), and a substrate that many cells can oxidize in mitochondria. Blood, urine, and saliva lactate levels reflect production, clearance, and cellular redox balance, often considered alongside the lactate/pyruvate ratio and other metabolic markers.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated lactic acid levels may reflect increased glycolytic flux, higher tissue or cellular demand for ATP, shifts in cellular redox state, slower mitochondrial pyruvate oxidation, altered clearance, or contributions from microbial metabolism; levels often rise transiently after intense activity. Low lactic acid levels may indicate lower glycolytic activity, efficient clearance or utilization, fasting effects, sampling timing, or analytical variability. Interpretation is most accurate when considered with complementary Cellular Zoomer results (pyruvate, Krebs intermediates, oxidative stress markers, and antioxidant genetics) and clinical context.
