Overview and History
Sebacic acid is a medium‑chain dicarboxylic acid (C10) produced primarily via omega‑oxidation of fatty acids. Biochemically it sits outside the main beta‑oxidation spiral and appears when fatty‑acid breakdown is routed through alternative enzymatic pathways in the liver and peroxisomes.
Researchers first noted urinary dicarboxylic acids while studying human metabolism and responses to fasting, high‑fat feeding, and metabolic stress. Clinically, sebacic acid is used as a measurable organic acid that helps map how cells handle fatty substrates and whether non‑standard oxidation pathways are active.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated urinary sebacic acid may indicate increased reliance on omega‑oxidation and other alternate fat‑breakdown routes. This pattern can occur with high fatty‑acid flux (for example fasting or ketogenic intake), periods of metabolic stress, certain medications, or when primary mitochondrial beta‑oxidation is less efficient.
Low or undetectable sebacic acid is typically non‑specific and may reflect low availability of fatty substrates, efficient primary fatty‑acid oxidation, or simply absence of the metabolic triggers that drive omega‑oxidation.
