About Chloride
Overview and History
Chloride is a halide anion and a major extracellular electrolyte. Biochemically it is an inorganic ion transported across cell membranes by channels and cotransporters and is abundant in plasma and interstitial fluid.
Historically measured in basic metabolic testing, chloride is clinically relevant because it tracks fluid and acid–base relationships. Key roles include maintaining osmotic pressure and electroneutrality with sodium and bicarbonate, supporting nerve and muscle function indirectly, and forming gastric hydrochloric acid.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated chloride values may be associated with shifts in fluid balance, reduced renal chloride excretion, or acidifying patterns that lower bicarbonate; they can also rise after large infusions of chloride-rich fluids. Lower-than-normal chloride may be associated with losses from the gastrointestinal tract, certain diuretic effects, or processes that raise bicarbonate and create an alkalinizing pattern. Accurate interpretation requires comparing chloride with sodium, bicarbonate/CO2, kidney markers, and other Foundation Zoomer results to identify broader physiological patterns.
