What is Leptin and Why Does the Foundation Zoomer Test for It?

Adipose-derived energy hormone
Leptin is a peptide hormone produced mainly by fat tissue that signals the body’s energy stores to the brain and helps regulate appetite and energy use. Measuring leptin offers insight into how the body perceives energy balance and how that signaling interacts with metabolic, hormonal, and inflammatory patterns.

Leptin FAQs

What is Leptin and why is it important?
Leptin is a hormone made mainly by fat tissue that tells the brain about the amount of stored energy. It helps regulate appetite and how much energy the body uses, and it also influences reproductive and immune functions. Tracking leptin gives clinicians a window into how the body senses and responds to energy availability.
What does it mean if my Leptin levels are low?
Low leptin levels often reflect lower fat stores or sustained low calorie intake and are linked to signals that conserve energy, such as reduced appetite regulation and changes in reproductive hormones. Low leptin can also relate to fatigue or altered immune responses. These patterns are best interpreted alongside other panel results like nutrient status, thyroid and reproductive hormones, and inflammatory markers.
What does it mean if my Leptin levels are high?
High leptin levels commonly track with higher fat mass and stronger energy‑store signaling, and they can appear alongside markers of metabolic stress or inflammation. In some cases high leptin coexists with reduced effectiveness of leptin signaling, so elevated levels do not always mean stronger appetite suppression. Clinical interpretation requires context from insulin, lipid, inflammatory, and hormonal markers.
Why is Leptin included in the Foundation Zoomer?
Measuring leptin helps providers assess how adipose tissue communicates energy status to metabolic and hormonal systems. Paired with insulin, lipids, inflammatory markers, and reproductive hormones, leptin helps reveal patterns of energy balance, signaling sensitivity, and systemic interactions that support personalized care planning.
