What is Lp(a) and Why Does the Foundation Zoomer Test for It?

Atherogenic lipoprotein particle
Lp(a), or lipoprotein(a), is an LDL-like particle that carries cholesterol and a unique apolipoprotein called apo(a). Levels are largely inherited and reflect how lipid particles interact with vascular and clotting biology. Measuring Lp(a) adds information about lipid quality and inherited patterns that can influence long-term cardiovascular assessment within the Foundation Zoomer.

Lp(a) FAQs

What is Lp(a) and why is it important?
Lp(a) is a cholesterol-carrying particle that combines an LDL-like core with a special protein called apo(a). Because levels are mainly set by genetics and are stable over time, Lp(a) provides insight into inherited lipid patterns and how lipids may interact with vascular and clotting systems. This information adds a layer to routine lipid testing that can change how a clinician interprets overall cardiovascular and metabolic profiles.
What does it mean if my Lp(a) levels are low?
Low Lp(a) typically suggests that this particular genetically driven particle is a smaller part of your lipid picture. In general, lower levels are associated with less contribution from Lp(a)-related pathways, but they don’t exclude other lipid or inflammatory patterns. Both low and high Lp(a) should be considered alongside ApoB, LDL, hs‑CRP, and other Foundation Zoomer markers to form a complete interpretation.
What does it mean if my Lp(a) levels are high?
High Lp(a) often reflects inherited variation in the LPA gene and indicates a larger role for this particle in your lipid profile. Elevated values are associated with lipid and clotting‑related patterns that clinicians watch for when assessing long‑term vascular risk, but interpretation depends on the whole panel and individual factors. Your provider will evaluate Lp(a) together with other lipids, inflammation markers, and personal history.
Why is Lp(a) included in the Foundation Zoomer?
Lp(a) is included because it reveals inherited aspects of lipid quality that standard cholesterol tests don’t capture. When combined with ApoB, LDL particle measures, inflammatory markers, and clinical data, Lp(a) helps providers detect meaningful patterns and personalize assessment and monitoring strategies.
