Lp(a) is a complex lipoprotein composed of an LDL-like core containing ApoB-100 attached to apolipoprotein(a) (apo[a]). Biochemically it belongs to the lipoprotein family and is measured as a circulating particle concentration or mass. Apo(a) has structural similarity to plasminogen, which links Lp(a) to pathways that influence both lipid handling and clot-related biology. Clinically, Lp(a) has been studied for decades as a stable, genetically driven biomarker. Levels are chiefly determined by variation in the LPA gene and by the size of apo(a) isoforms; lifestyle and acute illness typically change Lp(a) less than they change other lipids. Because of its unique structure, Lp(a) is used to characterize inherited aspects of lipid biology that are not captured by standard LDL or total cholesterol alone.

Elevated Lp(a) is commonly an inherited trait and may be associated with greater atherogenic and pro‑thrombotic potential compared with lower levels. In lab reports, higher readings are interpreted alongside other lipid measures (ApoB, LDL particle number, small dense LDL), inflammation markers (hs‑CRP, MPO), and clinical context to assess overall cardiometabolic patterning. Low Lp(a) generally indicates a smaller contribution from this particle to the overall lipid profile. Low values do not rule out other sources of lipid-related or vascular risk, so results are most informative when integrated with the full Foundation Zoomer panel and individual clinical history.
