Neutrophils are a type of granulocytic white blood cell (polymorphonuclear leukocyte) produced in the bone marrow and released into the bloodstream. They are a central component of innate immunity, characterized by multilobed nuclei, granular cytoplasm, and a relatively short lifespan compared with other immune cells. Historically, early observers of phagocytosis highlighted neutrophils’ role as frontline cellular responders to tissue insults. At the cellular level neutrophils clear particles and microbes by engulfing them (phagocytosis), releasing antimicrobial granules, and forming extracellular traps (NETs). Clinically, the absolute neutrophil count is a routine laboratory measure that reflects both immediate immune activation and underlying bone marrow production dynamics; changes can occur rapidly in response to stressors or medication effects.

Higher absolute neutrophil counts are commonly associated with recent or ongoing immune activation — for example, acute inflammation, bacterial exposure, physical stress, recent vigorous exercise, or certain medications. Elevated counts can also reflect shifts in distribution between tissues and blood. Lower absolute neutrophil counts may be associated with reduced marrow production, bone marrow stress, certain medications or toxins, nutritional influences, or increased removal from circulation. Interpretation of high or low values is most meaningful when viewed with other Foundation Zoomer markers (other white cell indices, inflammatory markers, organ function tests and medication history) and with trend data rather than a single value.
