Overview and History

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is a gamma globulin protein produced by plasma B cells and represents one of several antibody classes in blood. Biochemically it is a Y-shaped immunoglobulin with four subclasses (IgG1–IgG4) that differ in abundance and function. Clinically, measurement of total IgG evolved with serum protein electrophoresis and quantitative immunoassays to summarize humoral antibody mass. Functionally, IgG contributes to neutralization of toxins and microbes, opsonization for phagocytosis, activation of some complement pathways, and transfer of passive immunity across the placenta.

Interpreting Highs and Lows

Elevated Total IgG is associated with prolonged or repeated immune stimulation and increased antibody production; this pattern can be seen with chronic inflammation, ongoing immune activation, or broad polyclonal antibody responses. Markedly high or skewed IgG levels may reflect a dominant monoclonal or oligoclonal protein pattern when viewed with protein electrophoresis. Low Total IgG suggests reduced antibody production, increased loss, or dilutional effects and may be seen with impaired humoral response or protein-losing conditions. Any high or low result should be interpreted alongside other Foundation Zoomer immune, inflammatory, and protein studies to understand underlying patterns.
