What is DHEA And Why Does the Hormone Zoomer Test for It?

Adrenal androgen precursor
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is an adrenal-produced steroid that serves as a precursor for androgens and estrogens and participates in stress and metabolic signaling. Measuring DHEA offers insight into adrenal androgen output and how adrenal and sex-hormone systems interact with daily stress rhythms and overall hormonal balance.

DHEA FAQs

What is DHEA and why is it important?
DHEA is an adrenal-made steroid that provides raw material for the body to produce androgens and estrogens and plays a role in stress-related signaling. It contributes to how energy, mood, and reproductive signals are regulated through hormone conversion in tissues. Measuring DHEA reveals the adrenal contribution to overall hormonal balance and how it relates to daily stress patterns.
What does it mean if my DHEA levels are low?
Low DHEA suggests lower adrenal androgen production, which can occur with aging or when the adrenal reserve is reduced after prolonged stress. Low levels may be linked with feelings of low energy, reduced libido, or less robust stress tolerance, but they are not specific on their own. Providers interpret low DHEA together with cortisol patterns, DHEA‑S, sex hormone metabolites, and urine results to see the broader hormonal pattern.
What does it mean if my DHEA levels are high?
High DHEA indicates greater availability of an androgen precursor and can reflect increased adrenal activity, enhanced peripheral conversion, or external sources. Elevated values may be associated with patterns such as acne, increased body hair, or cycle changes in some people, but must be evaluated alongside cortisol timing, sex hormones, and metabolite profiles. Clinical context and complementary markers determine whether a high value reflects a transient change or a persistent pattern.
Why is DHEA included in the Hormone Zoomer?
DHEA links adrenal output, androgen precursor pools, and sex hormone metabolism, so measuring it helps providers see whether symptoms arise from production, conversion, or clearance patterns. When combined with cortisol, urinary metabolites, and sex hormones, DHEA improves pattern recognition across stress biology and endocrine function to support precise, individualized assessment.
