Estradiol is a steroid hormone in the estrogen family, chemically derived from cholesterol through enzymatic conversion of androgens. It is the most bioactive estrogen in reproductive-age individuals and exists alongside related estrogens such as estrone and estriol. Historically identified in the early 20th century as a central regulator of reproductive function, estradiol also influences bone turnover, brain function, lipid metabolism, and vascular signaling. Its levels fluctuate with tissue production, peripheral conversion, and renal/hepatic clearance, and its metabolites reflect phase I and II processing pathways.
