Overview and History
Mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) Phthalate (MEOHP) is an oxidative metabolite of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a commonly used industrial plasticizer. It is classified as a xenobiotic metabolite and is routinely measured in urine to estimate internal DEHP exposure.
MEOHP is formed by enzymatic oxidation of the primary monoester metabolite and is excreted in urine. Because it originates from an external chemical rather than normal human biochemistry, its presence and concentration primarily reflect recent contact and physiological processing of DEHP, with values influenced by timing of exposure, metabolism, and urine dilution.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated urinary MEOHP generally indicates greater recent internal exposure to DEHP or slower clearance; in population studies higher phthalate metabolite levels have been associated with altered patterns in hormone metabolites, adrenal markers, and oxidative stress measures. Interpretation should focus on exposure patterns and correlations with other panel markers rather than implying a specific outcome.
Low or undetectable MEOHP suggests low recent exposure, rapid clearance, or sample-timing and dilution effects. Low values do not rule out past exposure and should be interpreted alongside timing of collection, creatinine or specific gravity, and the rest of the Hormone Zoomer data.
