Overview and History

Propylparaben is an alkyl paraben—an ester of p‑hydroxybenzoic acid—used for decades as a preservative in cosmetics, lotions, shampoos, and some processed foods. Parabens were identified early in the 20th century; interest in their biological effects increased in the 2000s when laboratory studies showed they can interact with hormone receptors in vitro. Propylparaben is not produced by the body. After skin or oral contact it is absorbed, metabolized (often to p‑hydroxybenzoic acid and conjugates), and excreted in urine.
