GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein) is an intermediate filament protein abundant in astrocytes, the glial cells that provide structural and metabolic support in the central nervous system. GFAP is widely used as a cellular marker for astrocytes and plays a role in cytoskeletal stability, cell shape, and responses to stress. Anti-GFAP refers to autoantibodies that recognize GFAP.
