Overview and History
Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) is a member of the roseolovirus group within the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily. It was identified in the 1990s and is widely prevalent; most people encounter it in childhood. After initial infection, the virus can persist in the body in a latent state, primarily within lymphoid cells.
Anti-HHV-7 refers to antibodies—typically measured as IgG for past exposure and IgM when recent response is suspected—that bind viral proteins. These antibodies are a biochemical marker of host immune recognition of HHV-7 and are used in research and clinical testing to help map prior exposure, recent immune activation, or possible reactivation events that could interact with other immune signals in the nervous system.
Interpreting Highs and Lows
Elevated Anti-HHV-7 antibody levels may reflect prior exposure with a strong sustained immune response, recent infection, or viral reactivation. In the context of neuroimmune testing, higher values can suggest that HHV-7–related immune activity is one of several factors contributing to overall immune signaling.
Low or undetectable Anti-HHV-7 levels generally suggest no prior exposure, a very remote exposure with low circulating antibodies, or a window before antibody formation. Low levels can also occur with reduced antibody production. Interpretation should rely on the full Neural Zoomer panel and clinical history rather than this marker alone.
